Brown bears are highly intelligent and opportunistic omnivores that quickly discover accessible food sources. When such food sources are repeatedly obtained in proximity to human settlements, bears eventually lose their fear of people (habituation to human presence), sometimes even start to relate human presence with food (food-conditioning). This leads into ever more severe conflicts, often ending by lethal removal of the problematic bear.

If we want to prevent bears from coming into human settlements, we have to disable them the access to anthropogenic sources of food, such as: municipal waste and packaging, compostable and slaughter leftovers. One of examples of good practice in this kind of waste management is the use of so called bear-proof containers, which, when used correctly, completely prevent bears to access the contents.

It is very important to know that us humans through our incorrect and irresponsible actions create “problematic” bears. So it is up to every individual to do what is in their power to prevent encounters of bears to human settlements. With proper behavior any of us can contribute a lot to keeping the bears away from human settlements and so play a small but important part towards achieving a noble goal of coexistence of humans and large carnivores.
